Mac’s Tournament Announces 2009 Participants and the Return of US Teams to the Tournament
12/16/2009
When this tournament began in 1978, people wanted to bring the best competition to the city and play a leadership role in advancing midget hockey. We continue to strive to bring the best talent to Calgary to “Experience the Mac’s Experience” and we feel that this year’s group of teams will provide excellent competition as well as entertainment for the many fans of midget hockey. We are pleased to announce four new teams for this year’s tournament. North Island Silvertips from Vancouver Island, Lloydminster Tanroc Bobcats, and Winnipeg Wild are three new teams from Canada. And, from the southeastern United States, we have the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes making their first appearance at the Mac’s.
The Mac’s Tournament will also be welcoming back the four time Mac’s Champions, Shattuck St. Mary’s, giving the tournament two representatives from the United States. We are very pleased with the competitive field assembled for this year’s tournament and we are especially excited to have two teams from the United States joining us.
“The Mac’s Tournament is a great tournament for our kids; we are excited to be back. The experience our players gain from playing against this level of competition, and in front of a community that is passionate about hockey and supports this tournament, is immeasurable. Our team always looked forward to this tournament as a way to measure our team against the top midget-aged competition in the world.” Said Tom Ward, coach of Shattuck St. Mary’s. “We have always maintained a great relationship with The Mac’s Tournament Committee and looking forward to continuing to cultivate this relationship. The Committee has always put their best foot forward to ensure we had a good experience. It runs like clockwork, and that is what makes this tournament so great.”
The 32nd annual Mac's Tournament will be held in Calgary from December 26, 2009 to January 1, 2010. Round Robin games will take place at the Max Bell Centre, Father David Bauer and Centennial Arenas and the Championship Finals will take place at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
As announced on December 14th, coverage of the finals will take place on New Year’s Day – the female game will be aired at 10 a.m. MST and the male final at 2 p.m. MST. Viewers throughout Western Canada and Northern Ontario can tune in to their local Shaw TV channel to catch the games, or via Channel 299 on Shaw Direct. Repeats will be available on January 2 and 3, 2010 – and featured in the Free Zone on Shaw Video on Demand throughout January.
We are grateful for the continued support of Mac’s Convenience Stores, which allows Calgary to continue to host the top midget hockey tournament in the world. We encourage our fans to visit their Calgary & Area Mac’s Convenience Store, as tickets for this years’ tournament are now available.
The Mac’s Tournament supports the development of minor hockey in Calgary and hopes that everyone will “Experience The Mac’s Experience”.
