Pengrowth Saddledome – Female Division Gold Medal Game

Edmonton Thunder - 2                                   Swift Current - 3 (2OT)

The first period was filled with nervous energy, both teams made their fair share of mistakes.  The shots were low, six a piece and the period ended in a one – one tie, with Jenna Klynstra scoring her first of two for the Thunder, and Jenna Smith replying a minute later for the Wildcats.

Edmonton came out firing on all cylinders in the second period.  They dominated Swift Current in the early going of the second period forcing Swift Current to ice the puck several times and out shooting them 13-8, two period total of 19-14.  Edmonton scored the only goal of the period.

Just when it looked like the thunder were going to win the Championship, they ran into penalty trouble.  Finally, Swift Current was able to tie the game with just minutes to play on the power play to force over time.  Bailey Habscheid scored the goal on a nice slap shot from the point.

The teams played one ten minute over time period without a winner and Edmonton again was able to push back taking the play to Swift Current, shots on goal after 70 minutes of hockey were 23-23.  The teams exchanged scoring chances for most of the second overtime period.  Penalties again created trouble for Edmonton, they were the only team to take a penalty in the over time frames.  The game was finished by Swift Current while on the power play with 8:28 left to play, on a goal by Shelby Nisbet, emptying the benches as the exhausted Wildcats celebrated their second consecutive Mac’s Championship.

Pengrowth Saddledome – Male Division Gold Medal Game

Calgary Buffaloes -  6                                     Vancouver NW Giants – 5

It was a classic Mac’s Final at the Pengrowth Saddledome, that people will be talking about for years.  In double overtime, the Calgary Buffaloes’ Gregg Lamoureux finally scored the winner, to the delight of the mostly Buffaloes crowd.

The Calgary Buffaloes were off to a quick start; with Chris Collins scoring his first of three goals less then two minutes in the game.  This was the start of a seesaw battle, that saw many scoring chances by each team, and lead changes throughout the game.  By the end of the first period, it was 2-1 for the Buffaloes.  After Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied the game in the second, the Buffaloes would respond with two goals, with Collins completing his hat trick, and Drydn Dow also scoring.  It seemed that after over ten years, we may finally see a host team win the championship, but the Giants were not ready to give in yet.  After the Buffaloes got into some penalty trouble, the Giants scored two quick power play goals, and then started the third with another goal in the first minute to take a 5-4 lead.

The Buffaloes kept coming, but the strong goaltending of Khaleed Devji kept the Giants in the lead.  It seemed like the Buffaloes hopes were running out, but, with just over ten minutes left, Ryan Moser scored to tie the game, and send it to overtime.

In the two overtime periods, the teams continued their back and forth play, and the Buffs outshot the Giants 12-6, until Lamoureux finally scored the winner halfway through the second overtime.  For the Buffaloes, they had three goals and two assists from Chris Collins, who was given the first star of the game by Global.  Gregg Lamoureux and Ryon Moser also added a goal and two assists.  The Giants were led by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with two goals and two assists, while Michael Aviani added a goal and two assists.
