Female Round Robin Games
Max Bell Game #F29
Sherwood Park Fury 4 Prince Albert A&W Bears 2
Sherwood Park Fury took on the Prince Albert A&W Bears in some early morning ladies action at Max Bell. Both teams came out hungry for the win, and the Fury put one up on the scoreboard first halfway into the first. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the period, a momentary lapse in the Bears defense allowed the Fury another goal. In the second period Prince Albert fought hard to make a comeback, and they managed to tie the game. Sherwood Park’s Holly Carrie- Mattimoe scored her first of the game with 22 seconds left on the clock to end the period back in the lead. Carrie- Mattimoe scored the game clincher with a minute remaining in the third, putting the Bears away with a final score of 4-2. Stephanie Gavronsky assisted both of Carrie- Mattimoe’s goals, and Jenaya Townsend had a goal and an assist for Sherwood as well. Prince Albert’s goals were scored by Danny Stone and Captain Amber Matlock.

Lloydminster PWM Steelers 6 South Island Breakers 1
In the final game before women’s playoffs the Lloydminster PWM Steelers took on the South Island Breakers. The Steelers were looking for a win to secure their spot in the semi finals. Lloydminster opened up the scoring 5 minutes into the game on the power play and scored 2 more before the period was over. The Breakers couldn’t muster any offence; they didn’t get a shot on net the entire period. The scoring continued for the Steelers, putting 2 more goals on the board before the second period ended. The Steelers got a final goal near the end of the third, and the Breakers Mika Corrigan scored her teams’ lone goal for a final score of 6-1 Steelers. Markie Holt of the Steelers scored 2 goals and got an assist, and her teammate Jamie Owen assisted two of her teams’ goals.

Max Bell Game # 52
Vancouver NW Giants 5 Calgary Royals 2
Pool 1 winners the Vancouver NW Giants took on one of the wildcard teams, the Calgary Royals this morning to an excited crowd in the first quarter final match of the tournament. The Royals came out fast and physical, scoring two goals on the Giants. The Giants potted a shorthanded goal, and it energized the team. Before the end of the first, Vancouver had scored 2 more to take over the lead. The second period was all about defense for both teams, no goals were scored in the period. In the third the Royals played offensively putting pressure on the Giants. It did not pay off for Calgary however; the Giants scored an empty netter and held on to the lead. Vancouver now moves on to the Semi Finals. The game star for the Royals was Taylor Vause and for the Giants Jordan Weal took the honors.

UFA Bisons 8 Prince Albert Mintos 4
Pool 2 winners the UFA Bisons were matched against Pool 4 winners, the Prince Albert Mintos in some quarter final action this morning. The first period was a high scoring one, the Mintos landing the first 3 goals of the game. The Bisons hustled to get back in the game, and with 3 minutes left they finally got their first goal. Just before the period ended, they potted 2 more within 30 seconds of each other, stunning Prince Albert and evening up the score going into the second. The second period was strong offensively for the Bisons, putting off 13 shots to Mintos goalie Jordan Washburn, who did his best to keep the puck out of the net. The Bisons scored to take the lead for the first time in the game, but Prince Albert quickly responded with a goal of their own. Another set of goals near the end of the second propelled the Bisons into the lead once more. UFA maintained the lead, and scored 2 extra goals in the third for a final score of 8- 4 enabling them to move on to the next round. Mintos Captain Tyler Fiddler stepped up for his team, scoring 2 goals and getting an assist as well. Bisons Captain Corban Knight also had an outstanding performance for his team, scoring 2 goals and adding 3 assists in the game.

Calgary Northstars 1 Calgary Buffaloes 2
The hometown Pool 3 winners Calgary Northstars took on fellow local team the Calgary Buffaloes this afternoon in the third quarter final game of the tournament. Both teams came out blazing, setting the pace of the game early. The Buffaloes got a fast goal on the Stars 2 minutes into the game. For the rest of the period the Stars attempted to get on the scoreboard but were unsuccessful. The Buffaloes continued to battle hard, and scored a goal that was waved off. Both the Stars and the Buff’s had several chances to score in the second period, but the goaltending proved too tight to get a puck in the net. The Northstars Logan Gabel finally got his team on the scoreboard in the third period, but it was too little too late. The Buffaloes move on to the Semi Finals with a score of 2-1. Both goaltenders got the game stars for their efforts, David Donaleshen for the Stars and Sean Cahill of the Buffalos. Brooks Myers and Mark LeBlanc each scored a goal and got an assist for the Buffs.

Russia Severstal 9 Tisdale Trojans 3
Undefeated Pool 5 winner Russia Severstal played the Wildcard Tisdale Trojans in the last game of men’s quarter finals at Father David Bauer. The Trojans and Severstal both came out fast and furious. Russia scored 2 goals in the first, but the Trojans goalie Blake Voth kept his team in the game, blocking 16 shots in the period, double the amount Severstal’s net minder, Denis Korovaev had to deal with. In the second period, Tisdale got on the scoreboard, but were swamped with Severstals attempts. Russia managed to score 6 goals in the period, and the score was 8-2 heading into the third. Each team scored 1 last goal in the third making the final score 9- 3 for Russia. Alexei Trandin had 4 assists and a goal, and his Russian teammate Andrei Smirnov scored 4 goals and added 1 assist.

UFA Bisons 2 Vancouver NW Giants 7
The UFA Bisons and the Vancouver Giants faced off in a semi final game to determine who plays in the gold medal game tomorrow afternoon. Vancouver started the game off strong and scored three goals in the first period, the last one coming with 8 seconds left in the period as a result of a beautiful tic tack toe 4 way pass. They continued to dominate the game scoring another goal just over three minutes into the second. Marko Gordic then scored Vancouver’s fifth goal on just their 18th shot of the game. UFA was determined not to go through the game scoreless as Corban Knight scored a power play goal in the third after knocking down an errant pass by Vancouver’s goalie Peter Alexander and shooting the puck into an undefended net. Knight was able to put one more in with just over three minutes left. UFA continued to play frustrated hockey taking 8 more penalties in the third period, for a game total of 21. UFA had many scoring chances, but just didn’t have the finishing touch. Vancouver is heading into the finals with a 7-2 win over UFA.

Calgary Buffalos 1 Russia Severstal 2
Home town team Calgary Buffalos faced off against the undefeated Russia Severstal. Russia lead by Magomed Gimbatov (now wearing #11) jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period. After missing on several scoring chances early in the second, Calgary finally put it in making it 2-1, 2 minutes 14 seconds into the period just seconds after a Russian penalty ended. #20, Jordan Kanygin scored the lone marker in the frame. The third period was well played by both teams as they exchanged several scoring chances but the frame remained scoreless with both goalies playing extremely well. The Turning point was a 65 second 2 man disadvantage that Russia killed mid way through the last frame to maintain their one goal lead. Russia has earned the right to revenge their loss from last years final when they lost to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame Hounds 1 Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs 3
Two undefeated teams battled head to head for the right to play in the final game held at the Saddledome tomorrow morning. Notre Dame enters today’s game undefeated in four years of tournament play and are the only female team to win the championship since the inception of the female portion of the tournament in 2004. The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs and the Notre Dame Hounds proved to be evenly matched as neither team scored in the first period. Red Deer opened the scoring in the second with a power play goal one minute and thirteen seconds in. Notre Dame responded just under four minutes later with a goal by Skyelar Siwak. With under five minutes left in the period, Red Deer’s Kendice Ogilve scored her second putting her team ahead 2-1. Notre Dame was desperate to defend their title and battled hard in the third period, outshooting Red Deer 16-4 in the period. Red Deer took a penalty with under 2 minutes to play in the game providing Notre Dame a power play opportunity to tie to the score. Red Deer’s goalie, Camille Trautman, thwarted several of Notre dames scoring chances late in the period providing the opportunity for Red Deer to score an open net goal securing the 3-1 win, Kendice Ogilvie scored the short handed marker which completed her hat trick with just 27 seconds left in the game.

Lloydminster PWM Steelers 5 Swift Current Wildcats 1
The chance to play in the gold medal game against the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs was at stake as the Lloydminster PWM Steelers and the Swift Current Wildcats faced off at the Max Bell arena. The Wildcats opened the scoring with a goal by Katelyn Ptolemy halfway through the first period. Kali Gillanders added a goal for the Wildcats with 0:48 left in the first. They continued to rack up the score late in the second period with goals by Shelby Davey and Tiara Schoenroth, just 25 seconds apart to close out the second period. The Wildcats got there final goal when Brienna Gillanders scored on the power play at 8:08 in the 3rd. The Steelers refused to go down without a fight and finally put one in with 10 seconds left in the game. The Wildcats head into the final game with a 5-1 win over the Steelers.
