Westman Wildcats 2   Fox FM Prairie Fire 3

 

Both the Wildcats and Prairie Fire were hungry for a win this morning after both teams were coming off of the previous days defeats. With what looked like a possible tie to end the battle, Jessica Campbell scored with just 1.7 seconds left on the clock to take a 3-2 lead and give the Prairie Fire their second win of the tournament. Netminder Leanne Gerwing refused 28 shots on net, giving up only two goals; one to Brittany Phillips (1G, 1A) and one to Sara Baker (1G, 1A) for the Wildcats.  Both teams ended the round robin with 2 wins.

 

Max Bell Arena Game #41

Okanagan Rockets 6   St. Albert Sports Raiders 4

 

The Okanagan Rockets took their first win of the tournament this morning, outscoring the Raiders 6-4. With only fifteen shots on goal, the Rockets capitalized during the second the period, scoring three of the six goals to secure their win. Rocket forward Ryan Harrison (2G) earned himself the game star, as did Taylor Fraser (1G) for the Raiders. The Raiders didn’t go down with a battle, however. Sixty minutes of penalty time was accumulated, over half of that in the third period.

Edmonton CAC Canadians 5 Moose Jaw Warriors 2

 

Looking to end their losing streak, Edmonton came out in full force this morning winning 5-2 against the Moose Jaw Warriors. Julien Laplante (1G, 1A) scored just 4:58 minutes into the first period, opening it up for Josh Keizer (2G), Tyler Parks (1G, 1A) and Burke Gallimore to follow, securing the win for Edmonton. Gamestars went to Keizer for the Canadians and Brock Montgomery (1G) for the Warriors.

 

Cent Game #43

Fort Saskatchewan BP Rangers 4       Red Deer Optimist Rebels 6

Rebels Kyle Reynolds (3G, 2A) and Cody Cartier (1G, 2A)

 

Red Deer entered the day’s game one game below five hundred and would need a big game against Fort Saskatchewan to get back on even terms.  Red Deer started the scoring just a minute and thirty seven seconds into the game (Feser from Maclise and Neurater).  They took their one goal lead into the second period and at 17:38 the Rangers tied it up (Laschowski from Soprovich and Vanbrabant).  The teams exchanged goals throughout the second period which enable Red Deer to take their one goal lead into the third stanza.  Red Deer continued to push, lead by Reynolds who completed his hat trick, and they out scored Fort Saskatchewan two goals to one in the third and finished the game 6-4.  This was a must win for the Rangers, and most likely ended their tournament.

Edmonton Thunder 0              South Island Breakers 2

 

The South Island Breakers earned their first win of the tournament with a shutout victory over the Edmonton Thunder this morning. Breakers defenseman Emily Grainger scored the winner with a 5-on-3 advantage at the end of the second period. The Breakers were on top of their defensive game, killing off 10 penalties and helping goaltender Stephanie Johansen earn a shutout amidst 26 shots from the Thunder.

Saskatoon Blazers 5                Calgary Buffaloes 6

 

The Saskatoon Blazers took on the Calgary Buffaloes today at Max Bell. The two teams were both vying for the last playoff spot in their division to join the North Vancouver Giants. It was an exciting game, Saskatoon struck first with a goal just past the first minute of play. Half way through the first, they potted another on a penalty shot to make the score 2-0. The Buffaloes dominated from that point, and managed to put themselves ahead 6-3 with only about 8 minutes left in the game. Tempers were flaring between teams, and a fight broke out with just over 7 minutes left in the third period. This seemed to energize the Blazers as they scored 2 times to make the game 6-5. However, they couldn’t clinch the last goal, and the Buffaloes walked away with the win and the playoff spot. In total, the Blazers had 83 penalty minutes in the game and the Buffaloes had 65 overall. Blazers Christian Magnus came away with the game star after scoring a goal and getting two assists for his team, while Jacob Trask added two assists. Brett Switzer had the honors for Calgary, also having scored a goal and two assists.  Other Buffs with good games were Brooks Myers (2G, 1A) and Mark LeBlanc (2A).  The win should earn the Buffs a playoff spot, and send the Blazers home.

 

 

Father David Bauer Game #45

Calgary Flames 3                    Caribou Cougars 3

 

The Cariboo Cougars took on the Calgary Flames at Father David Bauer this afternoon. The Cougars opened up a 2-0 lead on goals by Nicholas Matte and Stewart Lambert. Allistair Chapman snuck one by Cougars goalie Paul Simoes to give his team their first goal of the game a few minutes into the third. A minute after Chapman’s goal, teammate Mathew Macdonald put the Flames back in contention scoring one to even it up. Chapen Leblond answered back, and helping the Cougars get the lead once more. Mathew Brown scored on the power play to tie up the game once more, and neither team could come up with a game winner. Mathew Macdonald picked up the game star for Calgary with a goal and an assist. Chapen Leblond got the honors for the Cougars, also having a goal and assist.  The Calgary Flames needed this win to help them get in the playoffs.  Now, they will await their fate, as they need some help from the other divisions to earn a wildcard spot.

 

 

Cent Game #46

UFA Bisons 10                       Thompson Blazers 0

 

The UFA Bisons absolutely buried the Thompson Blazers at Centennial Arena this afternoon, toppling them 10-0 and finishing the round robin 3-0-1. The deciding goal came within the first minute of action when Andrew Bergman slipped one over the goal line. The Blazers spent more than 50 minutes in the penalty box and the Bisons didn’t waste a moment, capitalizing seven times with the man-advantage. Blazers goalie Ben Humphrey saw 65 shots in the game. Corban Knight (3 A), Steven Fernie (2 G, 1 A), Brandon Rommens (2 G, 1 A) and Devin Mitzner (1 G, 2 A) helped bring their team’s total tournament goals up to 24. Austin Fyten (1 G) was named the game star for the Bisons and the Blazer’s Josh Cowen earned the title in his team’s effort.  The win earns the Bisons the division win, and a berth in the playoffs.

 

Cent Game #47

Beardy’s Blackhawks 3                      Edmonton K of C Pats 3

 

Both teams were looking to end their tournament on a winning note, with no chance of advancing to the playoffs.  The Edmonton K of C Pats took a 3-0 lead only about five minutes into the second.  But, that was when the wheels fell off.  Only twenty-five seconds after the Pats took the lead, the Blackhawks finally answered back on a goal by Brendon Wall, who later would assist on the game-tying goal also.  This did seem to energize the Blackhawks, as their energy picked up from there, and they eventually fought back for the tie.  The final goal was scored with less then a minute left, with Dylan Wruck tying it up.  Tyler Stevenson, Dustin Fostvelt and Steven Bowman replied for the Pats.

Prince Albert A & W Bears 3             Swift Current Wildcats 6

 

The A & W Bears needed a win in this game to keep their playoff chances alive.  But, the Wildcats were just too strong in this one, winning it 6-3.  The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead partway through the second period.  But, with their playoff lives at stake, the Bears fought back, scoring three goals to tie it up.  But, it was not to be as the Wildcats scored 3 more goals in the last ten minutes of the game to win this one.  Shelby Davey ended up with a hat trick, scoring short handed, even strength and on the power play.  Kali Gillanders added 2 goals and an assist in the win.  For the Bears, Chelsey Sundby, Jessica Hewitt and Madison scored.  The win gives the Wildcats the Pool 6 win, and a playoff berth.

 

Max Bell Arena Game #48

Tisdale Trojans 2                                 Calgary Northstars 3

 

The stars were shining bright for Calgary as they took on the Tisdale Trojans. The Calgary Northstars played the undefeated Trojans at Max Bell today to a vocal hometown crowd. The game was fast paced end to end action, making for an exciting performance by both teams. Tisdale struck first, but the Stars answered back with two quick goals at the end of the period less than a minute apart. Calgary got one more in the second period on a beautiful passing play. The Trojans scored in the third period, keeping the game within a goal but in the end, Northstars goaltender Jason Heiligsetzer maintained his excellent blocking skills to hold on. Logan Gable of the Stars got two assists, Tyler Jewitt got two goals, and Chris Korpach got a goal and assist for Calgary. Trojans Shawn Cowie picked up a goal as did Jesse Ismond. Northstars forward Tyler Jewitt and Trojans forward Jesse Ismond picked up the game stars. Both teams now move on to the quarter finals.   

 

Father David Bauer Game #M49

Leduc Schwab GM Oil Kings 5                                 Notre Dame Hounds 2

 

The Notre Dame Hounds met the Leduc Schwab GM Oil Kings this afternoon at Father David Bauer. The Hounds fell 2-0 in the first period to the winless Kings. The Hounds rebounded and managed to score 1 half way through the second period, but were still down a goal. The Kings scored one last goal in the second, making the score 3-1 going into the third. Leduc ensured the win with an additional 2 goals, and Notre Dame was only able to score one more time. The final score of the game was 5-2 n favor of Leduc to secure their first win of the tournament. Kings goal tender Jason Pohl had an outstanding game, picking up the game star but also blocking 36 shots from the Hounds. Maxime Dumond received the honors for Notre Dame.  

 

 

Cent Game #M50

Calgary Royals 5                                 Prince Albert Mintos 5

 

The Calgary Royals scored with 17 seconds left in the game to tie it up at five goals apiece. Royals captain Alex Grieve scored the tying goal while his team had a six-on-four advantage. Royals assistant captain Chris Perkin ended the game with five points, including an unassisted power play marker and was awarded the game star. Mintos defenseman Tyson Newell had a goal and two assists for the game star. In goal for the Mintos, Spencer Laycock turned away 38 shots.  By tying the division winner, Mintos, the Calgary Royals became the fourth Calgary area team to qualify for the playoffs.

Notre Dame Hounds 2            Lloydminster PWM Steelers 2

 

The battle for the division lead in Pool #8 ended up in a stalemate, which means that math will be needed to determine who wins this pool.  The Notre Dame Hounds rushed out to a 2-1 lead in the first period, and seemed to be in control.  But, in the second period, Meg Omand tied it up, finishing the game with a goal and an assist.  From there, the teams played a good defensive game, and no one was able to break the tie.  For the Steelers, Jennifer Moe also ended with a goal and an assist.  While, Laura Guillemette and Chelsea Karpenko replied for the Hounds.  With 7 points, the Hounds will now likely be in the playoffs with a chance to defend their title.  They just have to wait to see if they are the wildcard or the division winner.

Calgary Chaos 3                      Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs 3

 

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs secured their spot in the semi-finals by scoring to tie it up with less than two minutes left. Shelby Hammel from the Chiefs scored her first goal in the first period. The Calgary Chaos came back to tie it up in the second period with a goal by Crystal Patterson. By the end of the second period the Chiefs took the lead again with a goal from Kendice Ogilvie. The third period was when Calgary stole the thunder with two goals back-to-back; one from Erika Mitschke and the other from Megan Riebot. But Hammel scored her second goal of the night to tie it up. 

 

 

 

Max Bell Arena 2 Game #F28

Calgary Flyers 6                                              Kamloops Mystixs 2

 

The Calgary Flyers took on the Kamloops Mystixs in the final women’s game of the evening at Max Bell. Calgary scored two goals in the first peiod, one on the power play. After another goal by the flyers in the second, Kathleen McDonald put a point up for Kamloops to make the score 3-1 Flyers. In the third period, the Flyers exploded, scoring 3 goals and having 13 shots on Mystixs tender Jennifer Rauch. Calgary’s goalie Jessica Ross only had to deal with 3 shots the entire period. The Flyers Brittany Stvner had two goals and teammate Julie Johnson had two points with a back to back goal and assist. Kathleen McDonald and Angela Tenisci scored the only goals for the Mystixs.

 

 

Max Bell All Star Game #51

Team Mac’s 11                                                            Team Global 8

 

It was an exciting All Star game between team Mac’s and Team Global at Max Bell. In the first period, Team Global seemed to gel a lot faster than Team Mac’s, scoring 3 goals throughout the period. Team Mac’s managed to score 1, but had many attempts shut down by Global’s defense. The second period saw an amazing 11 goals in total from both teams, Corban Knight adding a goal and 2 assists to his goal in he first period for the Mac’s. Teams Mac’s took over in the third, scoring 4 goals to Global’s 1. Dylan Wruck on Team Global scored 2 goals, and Global teammate Tyler Fraser scored 1 and got 2 assists. Team Global’s Gage Olson also had a goal and an assist. Team Mac’s Corban Knight scored 3 goals and had 2 assists, Mac’s teammate Logan Gabel had 2 assists and 2 goals.  Logan Gable was named the star for Team Mac’s and Maxim Trunev got the nod for Team Global.
