Summary December 30th, 2006

Game #41 - UFA Bisons 6 - Edmonton CAC Canadians 5

Max Bell Arena

A tightly played battle between the Canadians and Bisons left the crowd nervous throughout most of the game this morning.  The first 5 minutes of play saw 2 goals on the power play, both scored by Bisons’ captain Brandon Hoogenboom. Edmonton later retaliated scoring with 1:40 left in the frame, ending the period with a tight score of 2-1. Excitement grew in the 2nd when Hoogenboom of the Bisons scored within the first 30 seconds of play, giving them a two-goal lead.  Their lead was shortlived as Edmonton scored 1:45 into the period and went on to score four straight goals, giving the Canadians a two-goal lead.  Cue the comeback, as the Bisons scored with 52 seconds left in the 2nd frame, and then two more in the 3rd for the exciting victory.  Brandon Hoogenboom scored his fourth of the game and the game winner with just 2:58 left on the clock.  He also added one assist to earn the Easton Game Star.  Justin Dowling added four assists, including an excellent individual effort on the game winner.  Canadian’s star of the game was Terrel Hince (#12) with one goal and one assist.  The Bisons will now be scoreboard watching to see what their fate is for their playoff chances.

Game #42 - Notre Dame Hounds 8 – Medallion Generals 1

Father David Bauer Arena

Notre Dame wanted to leave little doubt as to who would win Division #1 by beating the Medallion Generals 8-1 on Saturday morning.  The win gives the Hounds a 4-0 record in round robin play.  Patrick Sitko and Grayson Brown each scored 2 goals in the victory, while Shane Gray and Brayden Pimm chipped in with 3 assists each.  Scoring the loan goal for the Generals was Michael Morso in the first period on the power play.  Antoine Desrosier earned the victory for the Hounds in net, with a light workload, only facing 11 shots on goal.  The Hounds next action will be at the Max Bell Arena at 9:00am on December 31st for the Quarter Final.

Game #43 Saskatoon Blazers 4 - Calgary Royals 3

Centennial Arena

After the first 20-minutes of play, the Royals found themselves leading the game 3-1 over the Blazers this morning.  Royals  #12 Will Mullane scored a short-handed goal while his teammate #9 John McAllister scored on the power play. Calgary’s domination soon reversed as the Blazers scored 3 consecutive goals in the 2nd, including a power play goal by #29 Jacob Trask, who finished the game with 2 goals and an assist.  The third saw no scoring, leaving the Blazers with a 4-3 victory.

Game #44 – Calgary North Stars 5 – Beardy’s Blackhawks 2
Max Bell Arena

In a decisive battle for top spot in the tough pool four, the Calgary North Stars prevailed 5-2 against the Beardy’s Blackhawks at the Max Bell Arena. With both teams entering the match carrying an impressive 3-0 record, they came out flying. North Stars’ Matt Simmons’ power play goal late in the second held up as the game winner.  Kevin Mills, Steven Murray, and Tyler Jewitt each had a goal and an assist for the winners, while the Blackhawks’ captain Craig McCallum and Jorden Iron tallied the only two goals for their club. The North Stars, backstopped by David Donaleshen denying 20 of 22 shots directed at him, went on to claim the pool, and move on to a guaranteed spot in the tournament playoffs. Blackhawks’ ‘tender Adam Bartko was peppered with 26 shots, managing to stop 21, as his team will now look to get one of the three wild card spots available as a possible pass to the playoffs.

Game #45 – Vancouver North West Giants 5 – St. Albert Raiders 4

Father David Bauer Arena

Four second period goals from the Vancouver North West Giants would hold on to be just enough for a win as they defeat the St. Albert Raiders 5-4 at the Father David Bauer arena. The Giants got goals from five different players, but it was Brandon Thompson’s power-play marker with six minutes to go in the second that stood to be the game winner. The Giants win their first game of the tournament, and finish with a 1-3 record. With the loss, the Raiders stand in the bottom of pool four with a 0-4 record. Giants’ goalie Kyle Nielsen gets the win, while the Raiders goaltender Robert Sevigny managed to stop 15 of 20 in the losing effort.

Game #46 – Russia Severstal 5 – Edmonton SSAC Athletics 2

Centennial Arena

Russia Severstal scored four unanswered goals in the third period to secure a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton SSAC Athletics. The Athletics, whose record fell to 2-2 with the loss, had the lead 2-1 going into the third period, thanks to a short handed goal from team captain Matt Wear midway through the second frame. Severstal would score four goals in just over five minutes in the third period, pelting the Athletics net with 40 shots over the game. Alexey Trandin’s even strength tally would be the game winner for Severstal. With the win, Severstal sweeps pool three with a 4-0 record and will move on to playoff contention. Severstal goalie Sergey Shuhkin was strong between the pipes again, stopping an amazing 29 of 31 shots faced. David Simpson, keeper for the Athletics, had a 35 save performance to hold his team in it, but Severstal’s offence would prevail.

Game #47 Calgary Buffaloes 3 – Cariboo Cougars 2

Max Bell Arena

A third period breakdown by the Cariboo Cougars proved detrimental, as the Calgary Buffaloes scored two third-period goals to win the game. Cougars’ goaltender Damien Ketlo played phenomenal, facing an astounding 41 shots to earn the team’s game star. Still, the Cougars collapsed in the third, allowing the Buffaloes’ tying goal just 30 seconds into the period. Just over seven minutes later, Riley Reinbolt scored the winner shorthanded to earn the team’s game star. An undisciplined Cougars boarding penalty would prove costly though, squandering a comeback chance. The Buffaloes improve to a 3-1 record, and will hope for a wild card playoff berth. The Cougars’ record fell to 0-3-1 as they are officially eliminated from the tournament.

Game #48 –Moose Jaw Warriors 3 - Okanagan Rockets 1

Father David Bauer Arena

The Moose Jaw Warriors defeated the Rockets in a game that the Warriors needed to win in order to stay alive in the hunt for a wildcard birth. Moose Jaw’s Riley Gillies scored 2 goals including the winner to lead his team to victory. Dustin Lehne stopped 21 shots to ensure his team’s single point lead held up until Trent Rumpel potted an empty netter to guarantee the win. Jayson Reardon netted the lone tally for the Rockets to keep it close, but in the end it was the Warriors who proved more resilient in a hard fought match.

Game #49 – Denmark Nationals 4 – Prince Albert Mintos 1

Centennial Arena

After a tight first two periods, the Denmark Nationals roared to a 4-1 win over the Prince Albert Mintos with four goals in the third period at Centennial Arena. Cristoffer Eskcrod’s game winner for the Nationals came just two minutes into the third, with Jeppe Henriksen helping with the assist. Mintos’ goalie Carsen Chubak did his part, stopping 30 shots, but his team could not rally after falling down 4-0. Travis Statchuk scored the Mintos’ lone goal, some 24 seconds after the Nationals’ fourth, but it would not sway momentum. The penalty kill for both teams were 100%, each killing four minors apiece in what was a disciplined game. Frederik Andersen of the Nationals swept aside 20 of 21 shots, as his teams’ record finishes the tournament 2-1-1. With the loss, the Mintos’ record fell to 2-2, handing the pool title to the UFA Bisons.

Game #50 – Red Deer Optimist Rebels 3 – Calgary Flames 1

Father David Bauer Arena

The Flames needed to win this game to clinch a playoff berth, but it wasn’t meant to be.  The Red Deer Optimist Rebels took the Pool 2 title and knocked the Flames out of contention with a 3-1 victory.  After getting on the scoreboard early in the first period, the Flames were shutout the rest of the game by Rebels’ goaltender, Marc Boulanger.  It took until the third period for the Rebels to put the puck past Flames’ goaltender, Mark Friesen, and they did it four times.  Special teams were the difference in this important game.  The Flames couldn’t get their power play going though, only scoring once in its seven man-advantages.  Boulanger was sharp, stopping 24 shots on net, including a penalty shot.  The Red Deer Optimist Rebels will try to carry its momentum into tomorrow’s quarterfinal game against the Calgary Northstars at Father David Bauer at 9:00.

Game #F19 – Calgary Chaos 3 – Balmoral Hall Blazers 2 (OT)
Stu Peppard Arena

The fans at Stu Peppard Arena got their money's worth this morning as the Blazers and the Chaos needed overtime to decide who would go to the Championship Game.  Pheelan Mah scored the game winner 7:14 into overtime.  But, to get to that point, the Chaos first had to kill off a penalty early in the extra frame.  Caitlyn Metcalf also scored for the Chaos, and Mackenzie Rizos turned aside 26 shots for the victory.  Bailey Bram and Katie Wilson replied for the Blazers.  The Chaos will now meet the Hounds in the Championship Final at 6:00pm.

Game F #20 - Notre Dame Hounds 4 - Edmonton Thunder 1

Game F #21 – Notre Dame Hounds 7 – Calgary Chaos 0

Female Division Championship

Max Bell Arena

The Notre Dame Hounds looked confident as they stepped out on the ice to defend their Mac’s Championship title.  Hounds’ goaltender, Kayley Herman, earned a shutout as her team took gold for the third straight year.  Thanks to a flurry of hard shots on net, Notre Dame got on the board early and kept going right through the third.  The Hounds netted seven goals, including two goals each from Jenelle Kohanchuk and Lauren Crowmartie.  The undefeated home team, Calgary Chaos, put in a solid effort in the final, but was unable to crack this year’s Notre Dame Hounds.
