Preview: Female Division Final

1/1/2012

One the main theme of the Mac’s Tournament is development and it shows when looking at the list of notable Mac’s alumni. NHL players like Sidney Crosby, Nick Kypreos and Wendel Clark are all some of the stars that got their start at the Mac’s Tournament. The girls’ teams have also had the opportunity to showcase their talent, and with a new scholarship this year they have something extra to strive for.

Both teams involved in the female division final this year have a history of both athletic and academic success. This can be seen from their stats. Regina has six players who are graduating high school this year and their academic average is an impressive 87%. The players have also managed to achieve a high SAT average of 1750.The Thunder has eight players graduating this year and they have achieved an academic average of 80%. Even more impressive is a score of 1880 on the SAT, score by #20, Alanna Tinney. These scores show the commitment these women have towards both their schooling and athletics in order to become not just a great athlete but a great all around citizen.

Both teams have had a strong push to the finals and we are sure to see many of them in the future. Former players Stephanie Zvonkovic and Calaine Inglis both used their success in this tournament to gain them a spot on the U of C women’s Dino’s, playing alongside Olympic gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser and under hockey legend Danielle Goyette (coach). With strong performances in both academics and athletics, it’s obvious how hard the girls on both the Rebel and Thunder teams have worked. No matter who wins the Mac’s cup this year, we celebrate their great achievements and bright future.
