Mac's Midget Hockey Tournament: Male Gold Medal Game Update.

Vancouver NW Giants captured the 2009 Mac’s AAA Midget Hockey Tournament championship on New Year’s Day at the Pengrowth Saddledome, defeating the defending champions, the UFA Bisons. A genuine effort was made between both teams despite the final score of 2-1.

Giants forward Matt Bellerive opened the scoring on the powerplay halfway through the first with assists by team-mates Destrv Straight and Griffin Reinhart. The Bisons responded a minute later with an unassisted goal from Matthew Flette. The action-packed first period ended with the teams tied at one goal each. The crowd was a mix of hometown supporters and Vancouver fans.

The second period was eventful on the ice, however off the scoreboard as both teams remained tied at one apiece going into the second intermission. The teams were extremely disciplined throughout the game, accruing less than ten minutes of penalties between the two.   

Vancouver’s Griffin Reinhart managed to find some open net in the tight game to give his team the advantage and himself two point on the night. The Giants were able to hold on to their narrow lead throughout the third frame, narrowly escaping overtime on more than a few occasions. Vancouver welcomed the final buzzer, sticks, gloves and helmets flew as the Giants began to celebrate their victory. Forward Levi Bews earned the game star for the Bisons, and Giant’s netminder Charlie Finn scored the honor for his efforts.
