The Belarus National U17 finished off a perfect Mac's tournament on New Year's Day, downing the Saskatoon Contacts by a score of 6-1.
The first period was all Belarus, as they held the Contacts to just three shots through 20 minutes, while peppering Contacts goalie Rayce Ramsay with 18 shots of their own. The Belorussians would strike first, after Pavel Azhgirei would outwait Ramsay and tuck the puck passed the outstretched Contacts’ keeper. Belarus would widen the lead with 5:24 left in the opening frame after a nifty pass from Vasili Filyayev found Dmitri Savritski all alone in the slot, who would make no mistake, beating Ramsay glove side with a quick snap shot. Belarus would take that 2-0 lead to the locker room.
Belarus would continue to carry the play, and just 1:16 into the second period, Vasili Filyayev spun and fired in the slot, catching Ramsay going the other way and putting his Belarus team up 3-0. The teams would trade five-minute-majors, with Belarus captain Dmitri Savritski getting the gate for a vicious interference hit that left Ethan Hill of the Contacts shaken up Savritski got five and a game for the hit. Hill would return to the game. The Contacts couldn't capitalize on the lengthy man advantage, getting only four shots on the powerplay. They would go down a man for five minutes when Eric McNeilly took a major penalty and a game misconduct for head contact. The Contacts best chance of the game came on the PK, when Quinton Ong found himself on a breakaway after a Belarus turnover. Andrei Grishenko was there to stonewall Ong. The Contacts would kill the McNeilly major, and would trail Belarus 3-0 after 40.
The Contacts came out with a renewed sense of confidence and urgency, and as a result owned the first half of the third period. After Belarus took a hooking penalty, Eli Lieffers would get the Contacts on the board, tipping in a Dylan Thackery point shot home right on the doorstep. Belarus would take over after that, though, scoring three more times late in the period to take a 6-1 victory and claim the 2016 Mac's Male Division Championship. Despite staying in the net for all six against, Rayce Ramsay held the fort for the Contacts, facing 51 shots.
Belarus finished the tournament at a perfect 7-0-0.
